Heart Machine have announced a Spiritual Successor, Solar Ash note Originally titled Solar Ash Kingdom, with the last word dropped during development, which released on PS5 on console and Epic Games Store on PC sometime in 2021. The game is also Nintendo Hard, with combat and platforming challenges being unforgiving at times, but rewarding to players who master them. Gameplay is inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls, and focuses on frantic yet precise combat and a whole heaping load of collectibles. Despite the personal nature of the quest, his journey takes him to the far reaches of the continent, seeking the mysterious Modules that could lead him to the Immortal Cell, all while a mysterious monster continues to appear. He explores a long-since ravaged world, in search of a cure for his debilitating disease which is slowly killing him.

The protagonist is simply known as The Drifter, a lone wanderer with a Laser Blade and a drone to activate old-world objects. You can wishlist it on Steam.Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D Action RPG by Heart Machine, successfully funded on Kickstarter and released 31st March, 2016. Hyper Light Breaker will available to play in 2023. Solar Ash was published by Annapurna Interactive.

The game is being published by Gearbox Publishing, an arm of Gearbox Software ( Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands). Heart Machine also mentioned that it will continue to be a ‘multi-project studio’, and to expect more announcements in future. The studio wants Hyper Light Breaker to involve the community more in the game development process, so it will launch in Early Access in 2023. In an announcement on Heart Machine’s Tumblr, the studio remarked that with Solar Ash, its process ‘deviated heavily from how did things with Hyper Light Drifter‘ and how it ‘ to do things in the future.’ It seems the team has brought a lot of those lessons over to Hyper Light Breaker, which looks like it’ll mix the sensibilities of both games.

The announcement comes closely off the back of developer Heart Machine’s release Solar Ash, the studio’s first foray into a 3D game, which focused on the speed and momentum of movement. The initial art for the game (above) suggests there will be five different playable characters, and screenshots show us a few different environments and mechanics, like the hoverboard.
